About localism

Localism is the opposite of centralisation; it moves decisions and delivery closer to communities, when that makes sense.

Localism is all about harnessing the power, knowledge, skills and views of local people to strengthen decision making and service delivery. It develops better solutions to problems, fosters stronger connections and makes local places work for people.

Localism improves efficiency because investment is delivered in the right place and in the right way. A locally led solution is more likely to last because it’s gained local buy in and taken unique local needs on board.

In practice, localism means:

  • strengthening opportunities for citizen participation in local and regional decisions
  • unlocking the power of communities to develop local and regional solutions
  • devolving funding and control of local and regional matters
